With the support of Government and the regulators, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) Radioactive Waste Management Directorate came into being on 1 April 2007, with the responsibility for conducting research and development on behalf of the UK Government to support the programme for geological disposal. Monitoring is considered an important element in the management of all phases of repository development: in the management of safety and in providing transparency. Monitoring also provides a means of reassurance for the public and other stakeholders that the repository or elements of the repository are performing to expectation.
