WP6: Reference framework for repository monitoring

  • Consolidate the results obtained under WP1-WP4 and feedback obtained from dissemination activities (WP5) into a project internal deliverable and into an EC published report, responding in a comprehensive manner to the overall objective and reporting on the (then) current understanding of the consortium partners on monitoring a geological repository.
  • Provide a shared international view on how monitoring may be conducted at the various phases of the disposal process to contribute to safe repository operation and staged closure, while explicitly taking into account that selected monitoring activities must be adapted to the physical and societal boundary conditions defining a given monitoring context.
  • Suggest approaches susceptible to identify whether and how monitoring contributes to improve stakeholder confidence and acceptance of the disposal process.
  • Develop a reference framework for monitoring activities during the staged disposal process, which provides (i) an understanding of monitoring activities and available technologies that can be implemented in a repository context, (ii) a first understanding of stakeholder expectations for monitoring and recommendations for further engagement activities, (iii) a description of ways to breakdown main monitoring objectives into technical objectives close to the implementation of monitoring during the staged approach of the disposal process, and (iv) indications on how information provided by monitoring results might influence the decision-making process.
